Choosing a career is a huge decision in anyone' life. Not only can
it determine what college you plan to attend, it can determine the
whole path your life is on. You should be passionate about your chosen
career and love what you do, because most likely, you will spend a lot
of your adult life doing it. Just like with other careers, if you
intend to practice law, you should not only be passionate about the
law n general, but you should choose an area of law you would like to
specialize in and concentrate your education and early career
there.
There are countless areas of law that you could pursue. You may
consider practicing family law; this would require you to handle
divorce cases and custody battles. There is also accident and injury
law. In this case you would handle cases like personal injury claims
and wrongful death suits. You can also practice criminal lawsuit. With
criminal law you can specialize in various areas.
You can become a defense attorney and defend criminals on either a
state or federal level, you can become a prosecutor and convict felons
for their crimes or you can choose to defend businesses in criminal
law. There are also lawyers that specialize in business and real
estate. With the many aspects of the law, you may find it difficult to
choose which area you prefer and often your specialty will come to you
naturally as you practice different areas.
No matter what type of law you choose to focus on, you can
anticipate a lot of schooling. In addition to regular college, you
will be required to go to law school and pass a bar exam. A lot of law
students also participate in internships so that they can learn how
lawyers work on a day to day basis. This not only gives them
experience working in a law office, but often gives them court room
experience as well. If an internship is successful it can subsequently
lead to future job offers and enable the new lawyer to make
connections that they otherwise wouldn' be able to make on their
own.
